Core Training for SENCOs in EY

This course enables all SENCOs to have a greater understanding of their role and responsibilities. These three half day sessions each cover different aspects of the SENCO's role. At the end of three sessions, SENCOs will have a greater understanding of how to manage and organise their work, how to identify children, make referrals and organise groups. SENCOs will be expected to attend all three sessions, will be visited in their setting and will receive an information pack. SENCOs will be presented with a certificate at the end of the three sessions.

Makaton Level 1

Makaton signing and symbols can be used to support a range of learners to develop their expression and understanding.

This nationally accredited one-day Level 1 course (replacing the first part of Makaton Foundation Workshop) provides a detailed introduction to Makaton’s place in supporting communication as well as practical sign vocabulary and an introduction to using symbols. Videos show how Makaton can be introduced at home or in an education setting. To learn signs and symbols of the Makaton language programme (stages 1-2).

To understand how Makaton can be used to help pupils with communication difficulties to access learning and social interaction at school.

Makaton Level 2

This nationally accredited Level 2 Makaton course builds on the previous workshop to develop knowledge and understanding of both signs and symbols up to Core Vocabulary stage 4, and explores how to use them to support communication every day.

The course will increase participants’ knowledge of AAC and multi-modal communication and there are opportunities to revise and practise signing in a fun and active way. Levels 1 and 2 together are equivalent to the two-day Makaton Foundation Workshop previously offered.  To learn signs and symbols of the Makaton language programme (stages 3–4).

To enable staff to facilitate pupils with communication difficulties to access learning and social interaction at school using Makaton.

Makaton Level 3

This enhancement workshop concentrates on improving and developing participants own signing and translation skills using signs and symbols.

Practical sessions look at users needs in depth and the following aspects are explored:  How to adapt communication to suit them, how to identify and create opportunities for the user to develop their communication skills and how they can participate more in their community using Makaton.

Understanding and Supporting Children with Autism

This course run by the Speech and Language therapy team provides practical tips and strategies for supporting children with autism in the Early Years setting. 

Participants will be helped to understand how a child with autism experiences the world. It will be informative as well as interactive with audio-visual clips, group discussions and case examples.  A balance of information, reflection and practical ideas make this an invaluable course for practitioners to equip them to support children in their settings.
